City lost back to back games at Aggborough for the first time since August, as Corby Town snatched a late win.
The first half never really got going, and it lacked any clear cut chances from either side. City had more of the ball, and the first chance fell to Deon Burton who received a knock down from debutant Amadou Bakayoko, but the former Jamaican international drilled his shot wide. Danny Jackman had two shots in quick succession blocked, after good work from Jordan Murphy down the left wing.
It was clear that Corby’s best chances were going to come from set pieces, as Greg Mills whipped in a free kick that caused trouble for the City defence and goalkeeper Ethan Ross, who spilled the ball at first but he reacted quickest to regain it.
City were controlling the opening 45, and Murphy went close with a curling effort which ended up wide. Then substitute Daniel Nti, who came on for the injured Tristian Dunkley, was nearly clean through on goal after a defensive mistake but Corby’s Kalern Thomas dealt with the threat. Nti also had a free kick from around 25 yards out saved by Sam Donkin.
Seconds before referee Amy Fearn blew the whistle for half time, Corby took the lead. Mills delivered a corner into the box, where Duane Courtney beat the City defence to head the ball past Ross.
The second half saw much more attacking intent from City, and the first ten minutes of the half saw City taking the game to Corby. Nti cut in from the left but fired over, and Sam Minihan’s cut back from the right found Jackman on the edge of the box, but he shot wide. City’s best chance of the match thus far went to Bakayoko, who took advantage of a goalkeeping mistake only for the on loan Walsall striker to fire wide of the post.
Corby’s Greg Mills was causing City’s defence problems, as firstly he had a shot from just inside the box punched away by Ross, then his effort from the left flashed across goal.
Midway through the second half, City were piling more pressure on The Steelmen. The ball fell to Nti in the box but his shot went wide, and Jackman’s effort from a cleared corner was deflected off target. Tyler Weir got forward and got on the end of a one two, where he chested the ball down on the turn and volleyed, unfortunately for him and City the ball struck the base of the post and Murphy’s follow up was tipped over. Minihan and Murphy then linked up well, with the latter firing a shot wide.
The equaliser finally came with five minutes left, and it was an incredible strike form on loan West Brom defender Shaun Donnellan. From 30 yards out, he struck the ball with the outside of his right foot, and the ball looped over Donkin and into the top corner.
City were in the driving seat and searching for a late winner, as Nti received a Murphy cut back and his blocked shot fell to Minihan whose first time effort was tipped over.
However, it was City who ended up with nothing, as bang on 90 minutes Corby scored the winner. And it was a moment to forget for Ethan Ross, as a low cross from Kalern Thomas bounced off the City keeper's chest and into the net.
It was a cruel end to the game for City, who arguably deserved the win based on their second half display. The result leaves City in 18th place, only out of the bottom three due to goal difference.
