HEAVY rain put this fixture in doubt right up until kick-off, but City battled well in the heavy conditions to bring home all three points from Shepshed Dynamo.
There was a late enforced change in the City team as Birley was replaced by Gomes after picking up an injury and there was a booking for the recent arrival on 12 minutes for a foul.
It was the home side who created the first opening when Hurst linked up with Brennan who dragged his effort wide from a good position.
On a heavy surface it was difficult for both sides to get into their stride, however, we managed to get our noses in front just past the half-hour mark when Alex Tomkinson picked out George Forsyth’s run and he lifted the ball over the advancing ‘keeper.
We looked threatening in our next attack as Turton and Gomes linked up but the home side managed to scramble clear for a corner, which ultimately came to nothing.
We did profit from a flag-kick right on the stroke of half-time when a ball in to the near post saw Forsyth get away from his marker to notch his second goal of the evening.
It gave us a two-goal cushion at the break and early in the second period, a snap-shot from Tomkinson flew just over.
Once again there was no real flow to the game but it was City who were seeing more of the ball and looking the most likely side.
There was a change in goal on 66 minutes when youngster Adam Przybek who given his debut as he replaced Gwynne.
A good save from the home ‘keeper thwarted Nathan Hayward as he made room for a strike before an effort from substitute, Dave Reynolds, was parried as the ‘keeper managed to gather at the second attempt as Forsyth lurked with intent.
There was a late injury to Nick Turton as we saw out the closing stages without too many problems to secure a 2-0 victory.
