The strong winds dictated much of the game, as a battling City were narrowly defeated by promotion hopefuls North Ferriby United.
A squad rife with injury left Carl Heeley a difficult task in selecting his starting eleven. Danny Glover and Niall Thompson, not fit enough for 90 minutes, took their places on the bench. Daniel Nti was absent from the squad after a hamstring problem picked up at Lincoln.
The strong winds made for a scrappy opening to the game, both teams required time to adapt to the elements. The first big chance fell to Ethan Moore, just shy of the ten minute mark, as Ebby Nelson-Addy set him free down the centre. A last ditch tackle set him off balance and his effort fell into Adam Nicklin’s grateful hands.
Jose Veiga was then to deny Ferriby striker Anthony Wilson twice in quick succession, coming off his line to smother one chance, before reacting quickly to a close range header.
It was City who were to enjoy the last big chance of the half, as some great attacking play by Moore set up a chance for Reece Hales, who knocked it past the goalkeeper before a superb tackle by Paul Robson denied him a certain goal.
The game was evenly poised at the half time interval with City just shading it in terms of clear cut chances.
Niall Thompson replaced debutant Immanual Parry for the start of the second half, looking to strengthen City’s threat going forward.
Jamie Yates looked momentarily like opening United’s account, as his curling effort rattled the right hand post.
Thompson had the next great chance, as fellow substitute Aaron Williams picked out his run with a perfect cross. Nicklin was quick of his line and did well to hold on to the shot.
Athough it was City who were beginning to look more dangerous, it would be North Ferriby that were to break the deadlock. Liam King picked out Ryan Kendall in the area and his shot struck the post before hitting the back of the net.
The goal did little to counteract City’s period of possession, they frustrated their opposition with some intelligent passing play.
Thompsons pace and skill had noticeably freshened up City’s attacking options. He found himself in front of goal once more as he again linked up with Nelson-Addy. The keeper just managed to maintain his grip on the ball as he dived to his right to save.
Two North Ferriby players were booked for kicking the ball away, as City’s resilience in denying them a second visibly frustrated them.
The game opened up slightly more in the closing minutes as Worcester pushed harder for an equaliser. It was a valiant effort against their opposition and the conditions, but the full time whistle blew with City unable to steal a point.
Post-match, Carl Heeley spoke of the squads injury troubles and expressed that the strong winds had been detrimental to the quality of the game.
‘It’s a cruel blow when you only have a small squad, we’re absolutely decimated. It was hard to get eleven players on the pitch in a formation.
The conditions have ruined the game, it was a poor spectacle. Both sides had chances the quality of their front two meant they nicked it.’
