City extended the impressive run by bagging the fifth win in six games with a hard-fought victory over mid-table Guiseley.
Aaron Brown`s fifty-first minute header was enough to earn a spirited City side another vital win, as Ebby Nelson-Addy performed the necessary heroics by clearing off the line from Alex Johnson with just minutes remaining to ensure City recorded their tenth clean sheet in the Skrill North this season.
After a frantic opening an unchanged City carved out their first chance of the game as Graham Hutchinson`s neat pass wide led to Aaron Brown miscuing from Daniel Nti`s low near-post cross with just two minutes on the clock.
A Guiseley side full of attacking intent had the upper hand in the opening exchanges and came close as the lively Oli Johnson ran unchallenged down the right before flashing a dangerous cross across goal that Veiga did well to smother.
The Portuguese stopper was nearly caught out minutes later as Wayne Brooksby`s free kick fizzed across the box, evading the mass of bodies gathered in the six-yard area and whistling just past the far post.
City worked Steven Drench towards the end of the half of limited chances as Ellis Deeney`s speculative long-range drive took a deflection off a defender before being gathered easily by the Guiseley goalkeeper, before Aaron Brown spotted Drench off his line just two minutes before the end of the half, but saw his clever, curling attempt to embarrass the goalkeeper held up amid the strong winds and gave ample time for him to recover to clutch the ball.
The hosts came close just seconds later as Gavin Rothery flashed a shot from the edge of the area inches wide of Veiga’s far corner to end the half, before substitute Danny Forrest struck a shot just wide of the near post just thirty seconds after coming on to replace Oli Johnson at half time.
But a rejuvenated City snatched the lead in the fifty-first minute as Daniel Nti broke down the right hand side with a powerful run before his deep cross found the imposing figure of Aaron Brown who looped his header home into the far corner to bag his second goal in six games for the club.
Brown could have had a hat trick within five minutes of heading City in front, dragging a shot wide of the far post with a shot from the edge of the area before heading wide from Ellis Deeney`s in-swinging free kick.
Veiga kept City`s clean sheet intact as he scrambled to deny Adam Boyes from close range shortly after. But City continued to press for the security of the second goal as Steven Leslie fired into the midriff of the goalkeeper, before being teed by Brown and firing over the bar from the edge of the area.
City looked lively on the counter attack throughout the game and threatened again approaching the hour-mark as Daniel Nti challenged bravely to prod the ball to Brown on the half way line, before the midfielder drove forward, unleashing Ethan Moore in the area, with City’s top-scorer being thwarted with a low save from Drench.
And the Blue and Whites had to withstand heavy pressure for the last seven minutes as Alex Johnson was guilty of lashing over from inside the six-yard box after Brooksby`s low cross. City continued to protect to their lead as Johnson again attempted to bundle home from a corner, only to be denied by Nelson-Addy with his superb positioning on the goal line allowing him to hack the ball clear to deny a certain goal and to secure another vital win for Carl Heeley’s side.
“The first ten or fifteen minutes of the second half I thought was our best spell, and we got a goal. And this season the one thing we’ve done consistently is defend and keep clean sheets. We knew if we could get a goal we’d be tough to break down and that’s how it’s worked out so it’s a great three points”, admitted the City boss.
“We’ve won five out of six now and it’s brilliant. The belief’s there and the confidence is there”.
And Heeley was keen to thank the City fans that made the long trip north.
“And a little mention for our supporters today. They’ve come up here and braved the conditions. They’ve stood in the rain and got behind the team. As much as we’re pleased from a playing point of view you have to give them credit because they’ve played their part as well and fair play to them".
Attention for City will now turn to Worcestershire Senior Cup action with the short trip to Redditch United on Tuesday night.
