City came away from Northolme empty handed after failing to convert a hatful of chances.
Ellis Deeney dropped to the back four in place of the injured Richard Munday and Kristian Ramsey-Dickson started up front in place of Ethan Moore.
City had the best of the first half creating several openings & after a neat move Steven Leslie threaded a ball through the Trinity defence which saw Kristian Ramsey-Dickson and Aaron Williams get in each others way with the latter managing to get a shot in which was deflected wide by Leary. It was a golden opportunity to break the deadlock but City didn't have to wait long as from the corner Daniel Nti flicked a header to the undefended far post and into the net to give City a 1-0 lead.
Within minutes City had another chance when Leary gave the ball away to Steven Leslie who set Aaron Williams up but his shot curled around the wrong side of the far post.
After the break City continued to dominate with Phil Barnes saving well from Kristian Ramey-Dickson who took a dipping shot from the edge of the area.
The game turned within one second half minute. First Bradley Barraclough grabbed an equaliser after turning neatly inside the area to score off the post then with City giving the ball away straight from the re-start Trinity forced a corner. Caine Winfarrah's cross was powerfully headed home by Callum Howe to give Trinity a 2-1 lead.
City forced two glorious chances within minutes. First Kristian-Ramsey Dickson shot well over then after another good City move Aaron Williams found himself with the goal at his mercy but his tame shot was easily saved.
Soon after Jamie Wootton thought he had extended the lead after great link up play between Brad Barraclough and himself, but Jose Veiga produced a stunning save to tip the ball around the post. Trinity had further chances to extend their lead but like City were unable to convert them.
Tyler Weir was forced off injured to be replaced by Danny Williams then Aaron Farrell & Ethan Moore came on within minutes of each other to replace Aaron Williams and Kristian Ramsey-Dickson but City were unable to maintain the same play which had created so many chances and Trinity finished the strongest.
