In a game full of twists and turns, City fell just short of table topping North Ferriby United in a 2-1 defeat.
With Ryan Boot injured earlier in the week & Jose Viega also injured City brought Callum Preston in from Birmingham City to go in goal. Aaron Brown & Aaron Farrell were both unavailable and with Kristian Ramsey-Dickson joining Stourbridge & Steve Leslie emigrating to Australia City were down to the bear bones. Carl Heeley brought in James Lemon and Max Crisp into the squad to join Santiago Aloi on loan from Kidderminster Harriers and even naming himself on the bench.
Ethan Moore had the first chance of the game after Daniel Nti did well on the right hand side to supply the cross. Unfortunately for City, Moore’s header was saved well by Pecora as it looked destined to nestle in the bottom corner of the net.
As the game continued, Ferriby started to apply pressure with Jarman having a header on goal well tipped over by debutant Callum Preston.
The first goal of the match was eventually converted after Nathan Jarman added his 18th of the season for Ferriby through a penalty kick. The penalty came from a goalkeeping error after Preston caught the ball from a Ferriby corner. With the wind causing havoc, Preston took the ball to the edge of the box to kick from the floor but failed to see Clarke who swooped round the keeper only for the Birmingham loanee to clip the heels of the Ferriby man.
Shortly after the opener, City broke from another Ferriby attack and Devaney played a teasing ball forward to the on chasing Daniel Nti. Nti who before today’s game had already netted 13 goals broke free on goal only to be brought down ironically by Danny Clarke just outside the box. The midfielder in conclusion was sent off giving City the one man advantage. Following the incident, Nti struck the free kick straight into the top left hand corner giving City an equaliser before half time, in superb fashion.
The second half started similar to the first with both teams trying to catch each other out on the counter attack. Eventually, Ferriby again took the lead through Centre Back Mark Gray, after Worcester failed to clear their lines in a goalmouth scramble. Despite City’s best efforts they couldn’t quite clear the ball and eventually Gray grabbed on to the loose ball to slam it past the falling Preston.
City battled on till the end, having two big chances to equalise. Firstly through Ethan Moore who headed over from a good team move. The play started with Thomas switching play to George Williams who put in a delicious cross for Ethan Moore who just headed wide of the post.
When 3 minutes of added time came up, a ball played deep inside the Ferriby box fell to Nti who turned his man only to fire over the bar when attempting a volley.
Carl Heeley: ‘’We like to compete, and today we have made a good account of ourselves. We’ve had a fantastic start to 2014 and today we fell a bit short but I can’t criticise the lads as they have been terrific over the last few months and it just wasn’t to be today’’
