Workington's Joe Jackson secured all three points with a curling effort from an injury time free kick.
City started the game controlling the middle of the park as Aaron Farrell was looking lively, causing the Red's defence problems with his pace. On the 7th minute, Farrell broke the offside trap but drove his shot straight at the Workington stopper, Nizic. Minutes later, he thought he was through and slotted home, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag. The 15th minute saw some neat inter-play between Farrell and Aaron Williams but the effort from 18 yards was saved comfortably by Nizic, in the Workington sticks.
City enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the first half with Deeney and Nelson Addy, commanding the centre of the park, spraying balls wide and stretching the Workington back line, but City failed to find the killer pass. With commanding displays from Wayne Thomas and Graham Hutchison at the back, City shut out Workington for the first 45 minutes and Bedwell was merely a spectator.
The second 45, once again, saw City pressing high and stretching the Workington back line, with balls in to feet on the edge of the Red's 18 yard box. As City pressed, the defence held strong and forced errors and misplaced passes. Carl Heeley made his first change on the 58 minute mark. On loan, Santiago Aloi replaced Aaron Williams in the centre of the park.
On 65 minutes, the ball ricocheted to Ethan Moore on the edge of the area but his curling effort was plucked out of the sky by Nizic.
Further changes came about on the 71st minute, as Heeley looked to inject some life back in to the game. Daniel Nti, who had worked tirelessly was replaced by James Lemon for his 3rd first team appearance, and minutes later, Tyler Weir, after a strong display was replaced by the returning Danny Edwards, who had been sidelined for almost 12 months through injury.
Tensions and frustrations grew as the game progressed and after a goal mouth scramble in the Workington box, Wayne Thomas and Dan Wordsworth both went in to the referee's book for an off the ball scuffle. Seconds after the restart, Kyle May was booked for a late tackle on Ellis Deeney.
The referee indicated 3 minutes added time, as Workington broke forward. On 20 yards, City gave away a cheap free kick and were made to pay for the mistake. Joe Jackson stepped up and curled his low effort around the wall and past the diving Bedwell, with the ball nestling in the net, sending the Borough Park crowd in to raptures.
