Worcester U11's welcome Coventry

Worcester City FC today welcomed Coventry having played them in the opening fixture which turned out to be a 10 goal thriller!

First quarter, with the game starting quite slowly there were very few chances being created by either team in what were cold, wet and slippy conditions. The opening goal of the game came as a result of a set play with Joe lofting a free-kick deep into the Coventry area, the goalie produced a fine save, however the loose ball landed at the feet of Hobbo who slotted the ball into the net 1-0! The second goal of the 1st quarter came from some nice interplay between Jay and Scott in the centre of the pitch which created the space for the through ball to Hayden, using his pace he beat the defender and faced with the goalie to beat, he coolly found the bottom right hand corner, 2-0!

Second quarter, the first good chance of this quarter went to Coventry who countered down the right with the midfielder passing to the striker who shoots from outside the area into the top corner, this was a lovely finish, but unfortunately the linesman had flagged for offside. WCFC right midfielder Corey runs directly at the goal, beats one defender, then another and shoots, but its goes just wide. With Corey now feeling confident he takes on his defender again and goes past him and gets ready to shot, but is tackled hard by the last defender and goes down appealing for a penalty.... sadly for him the ref said fair challenge. Midway through this quarter WCFC get a corner, Jay floats it in to the near post, Corbin attacks the cross and nips in front of his defender to head the ball bravely into the net, 3-0! Coventry on the attack this time and following a nice flick on down the right the attacker is through on goal, he shoots, but Archie saves and Ross who is playing great clears the danger. Coventry on the attack again and with a nicely weighted pass behind the WCFC defence their striker finds himself through on goal, Archie again makes himself big, but the finish is top draw and goes in the top corner, 3-1! Corbin and Corey combine well, Corey out paces his defender and smartly plays it back to Corbin who shoots, however the goalie is positioned well and makes the save.

Third quarter, with Coventry feeling that the game is still there to be won they really pressure WCFC for the first 10 minutes of the quarter and have lots of the possession in the WCFC half, but just cannot seem to find a way through the WCFC defence with, Joe, JD and particularly Connor managing producing a string of last man tackles. The next goal comes from a Coventry attack, WCFC quickly switch the ball around on the counter with Corbin turning his man neatly, he passes to Hobbo, quick one two with Hodgey, who passes to Corbin again who shoots, great save from the keeper who pushes the ball on to the crossbar, but with the ball loose in the area Hodgey reacts quickest and fires the ball in the net, 4-1! Some more pressure from Coventry and with the attacker through he finds himself all alone by the penalty spot, tries a cheeky lob past Archie which goes just over bar.

Fourth quarter, WCFC attack with Scott and Corey linking well, Corey crosses, however the goalie reads it well and makes the save. Soon after WCFC get a corner, Scotty whips in the ball which may or may not of touched the defender before landing in the net, but Scott a striker so he rightly claimed it, 5-1! Another corner from Scotty which is lofted to Connor, he jumps to met it, but heads just over the bar. WCFC attack down the right with Corey beating his man again, he draws in the second defender and produces a precise pass to Corbin who from the edge of the area strikes the ball into the top corner, 6-1! Coventry’s long haired attacker continues to torment the WCFC defence, this time down the left, he beat his man and fires in a shot which Hodgey clears off the line. With the last 10 minutes starting to get a little scrappy there’s still time for one more goal. One of Coventry’s midfielders crosses from left to right, the attacker crosses it back into the area and Coventry are first to pounce on the loose ball by putting into the net, 6-3!

The game was played with a great competitive spirit by both sides and great fun & entertainment was had by all. Best of luck to Coventry and the boys for the rest of the season.
