Improved performance shows City heading in right direction!

West Brom welcomed Worcester City to Edgbaston today in the reverse of the competitive fixture that was played back at the end of January. Another spirited start to a game between the two sides meant that chances were few & far between for the majority of the first quarter, with Worcester edging the possession statistics as the quarter progressed. As the second quarter began West Brom looked brighter than they were in the first, notably by attempting to stretch the game in what was a tight midfield area, however credit must go to Worcester City as they defended admirably and restricted space in their defensive third.

At half-time the game was goalless with limited opportunities for both teams. Changes were made by both teams, and during the third quarter, newly introduced forward Giovanni Nolan produced a mazy run as he bore down on the Worcester goal, his shot was blocked however Reece Brown was on hand to despatch a delightful effort into the top corner, as the Worcester City goalkeeper was temporarily wrong-footed. The goal opened up the game, with both goalkeepers now being called into action; Joe Whiteway in the West Brom goal producing vital saves through quick reflexes, and also by leaving his line quickly and confidently to force Worcester City wide in a promising situation.

Within the fourth quarter Chisom Afoka produced a calm finish on his debut appearance, picking up the ball in the inside left channel, before beating a defender and then calmly slotting home across the goalkeeper. The game now became stretched which suited the home team, and Giovanni Nolan grabbed a goal by poking over the goalkeer and in off the crossbar, from what was a very tight angle. Both teams finished the game strongly, and brave defending from Ben Kaninda, Jamie Fox & Filimon Asfha prevented Worcester from grabbing a late goal. Credit to both sets of players for producing a very competitive and committed game today.
