Great start to the season!

Worcester City today played hosts to Evesham United on what was the opening day of the season. The conditions were overcast with light rain.

Q1 – Worcester were quickly into their stride and spent most of the first quarter camped in Evesham’s half. The only game of the quarter came after a strong run down the wing by Tristan Webby who drilled the ball into the box from a tight angle and Joe Palmer was on hand to slot the ball past the keeper from close range. Worcester threatened on a number of occasions to extend their league, but the woodwork and some fine saves from the Evesham keeper kept the score at 1-0.

Q2 – Worcester continued where they had left off and were soon 2-0 up. The goal was scored following a wonderful 40yard through ball (the “pass of the day”) by Jacob Titheridge which was neatly despatched by Joe Palmer into the far corner of the net past the onrushing keeper. Worcester extended their lead further after one of many pin-point corners from Ethan Sherwood was headed home strongly at the near post by Tom Mills. (3-0)

Q3 – Evesham came back into the game in this quarter and reduced the deficit directly from a free kick. Despite a strong showing from the visitors, they were unable to get any further foothold into the game. (3-1)

Q4 – Worcester started the final quarter strongly and laid siege to the Evesham goal. Following some good work on the edge of the box, Ethan Sherwood curled a shot over the visitors keeper and into the bottom of the net. A 5th goal was added soon after when the ball fell kindly, after a Tom Mills shot was saved by the keeper and Jamie Meddows was on hand to slot home the rebound. Worcester were soon 6-0 up with the “goal of the day”, Zach Bowater found Tom Mills on the edge of the 6yard box with a pin-point pass, Tom Mills teed the ball up on the volley and then volleyed the ball strongly into the roof of the net. The final goal was scored by Prince Henry who latched onto a Tom Griffin through ball, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into an empty net. (7-1)

A really strong performance today from all of the Worcester boys who appear to have hit the ground running! Well done to Evesham for never giving up the fight. We look forward to visiting their ground later in the season.

AWARDS : Gold - Ethan Sherwood, Silver - Harvey James, Bronze - Tom Mills
