Today we travelled to play Hereford in sunny Wellington. The pitch was hard and bobbly, so we knew that it would be difficult for Worcester to play their usual passing game!
Q1 – The first quarter was a fairly even affair, in which both sides had limited opportunities. Worcester were first to go close when Olly Berry found Joe Palmer with a great through ball and Joe Palmer narrowly missed the target with a shot that flashed across the face of the goal. Hereford also went close although their striker put his one on one opportunity narrowly wide. 0-0
Q2 – Worcester were more purposeful in the second quarter and played far more on the front foot. The deadlock was broken after Olly Berry made a strong run into the penalty area only to be brought down before he was able to get his shot away. The ensuing penalty was calmly despatched by Tom Mills. Despite going close on a couple of occasions, Worcester were unable to extend their lead. 0-1
Q3 – Almost immediately from the kick off Olly Berry was again brought down in the penalty box after a good run and Tom Mills stepped up to score his second from the spot. Despite going 2 down, this quarter saw Hereford battle their way back into the game and they reduced the deficit following a good move. The goal itself came following a fine save from Ben Clay with his feet although the ball ricocheted around the six yard box before the Hereford player put the ball in the net from close range. 1-2
Q4 – The game was now finely balanced although Worcesters nerves were calmed after Tom Mills pounced on a goalkeeper fumble to slam the ball into the roof of the net for his hattrick goal. The assist came from a Joe Palmer cross. The game was again put on a knife edge after a long range free kick sailed over the Worcester keepers head and into the top of the net. Despite Herefords best efforts to find an equaliser, the Worcester defence held out and the game finished 2-3.
This was a well contested match played between two strong sides.
