Match report by Tristan Webby

In much better conditions then the previous couple weeks, Worcester set out to play Bristol Inner City in a crucial game for both sides.

Worcester started Q1 in great fashion; passing the ball quickly, stringing together some cracking attacking moves. Their efforts were rewarded when Zach Bowater found himself in some space and put a perfectly weighted ball over the top for Matt Patrick-Rivers. Matty took the ball into his stride, rounded one defender and, with his left foot, placed the ball into the roof of the net. 1-0 after 4 mins. The rest of the quarter was the same – with Worcester dominating possession – but the excellent BIC defence held firm and Q1 ended 1-0.

Worcester again found themselves on the front foot in Q2 and their constant pressure payed off when, after some good work, Finn Syson pulled the ball back to Tom Mills who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner in the 27th minute. 2-0. The rest of the second quarter was a tough midfield battle, but the score remained 2-1 at HT.

BIC came out determined to pull one back in Q3. Wave after wave of attacks pushed Worcester back and resulted in them winning a corner early on. The corner was swung in and went straight in at the back post. 2-1. After the goal, Bristol were clearly energised. Worcester managed to weather the storm, the City defence remaining strong. Q3 ended 2-1.

Worcester regained control in the 4th quarter, however BIC came close to getting a second after being rewarded a free kick just outside the box. The BIC player though he had scored after his strike seemed to be heading into the top corner – only to be denied by a terrific acrobatic save from Ben Clay, keeping Worcester ahead. Worcester then sealed the game when Finn Syson (again the provider) slipped Matt Patrick-Rivers through who finished smartly into the bottom corner. 3-1 after 70 mins. With the game effectively now over, Worcester saw the remaining 10 mins out with some good possession and defending.

It was a hotly contested game, played by two teams challenging for top of the league, but Worcester managed to keep up their good form with the win.

We wish BIC all the best for the rest of the season.
