Great team and Captains performance away from home

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had a great team performance away from home when they visited the Droitwich Spa Vikings U9s team at St Peters Field, Droitwich on Saturday 19th October 2019.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Nathan gave an encouraging speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Thomas, Theo, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Ewan, Ethan, Hayden, Olly & Ethan
Forwards - Nathan

First Half
The match began with City on the front foot and they made all the early chances. All the City boys were putting in the effort asked by the Manager before kick-off and Droitwich were struggling to keep pace with them.

Within the first 10 minutes, Nathan boosted by his great performance last week, had beaten a defender one-on-one and also made a great run towards goal, although his shot was saved by the Droitwich keeper.

However, with 12 minutes on the clock all of Nathen’s early form resulted in a goal for City (that was Nathen’s second goal of the season).

Over the next 10 minutes, Droitwich rallied and began to put City under pressure. They began to make breaks through the City midfield and defence which resulted in a number of shots on target towards the City goal, however Tom in the City goal pulled off some great saves to deny them.

However, within the last few minutes of the half, the sustained pressure from Droitwich resulted in a couple of goals being scored by them in quick succession and another pinging off the crossbar.

City went into half time trailing, but the Managers talk at the break was upbeat as there were lots of positive signs and City just needed to be more aware of the Droitwich boys making runs behind our defence.

Second Half
Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, Nathen playing up front and Ethen supporting him from a midfield position put on a masterclass of passing, evasion and finishing.

The next goal scored for City came within 2 minutes of the restart from Ethan after some great passing between himself and Nathen (this was Ethan’s third goal of the season).

That was followed 2 minutes later by another Nathen goal after a great forward pass from Thomas and which Nathen deftly took the ball around a Droitwich defender and shot (that was Nathen’s third goal of the season).

Another 2 minutes later and Nathen was on the score sheet again, this time from a corner floated to the edge of the box from Thomas. Nathen picked up the ball from the tightest of angles but was able to get a shot away which evaded the Droitwich keeper (that was Nathen’s fourth goal of the season).

We had to wait another 4 minutes, but again Nathen was slotting the ball into the corner of the net past a diving Droitwich keeper (that was Nathen’s fifth goal of the season).

Over the next 10 minutes, Nathen had a shot that hit the post and Ewan battled to have another shot which was only just wide.

Nathen managed to bag another goal a few minutes before the final whistle (that was Nathen’s sixth goal of the season).

Droitwich battled throughout the second half of the match and tried their best to get another goal back but some great goal keeping from Tom and defending from Joel, Theo and Max and breaking up of play & passing from the midfield of Hayden, Ethan, Olly, Thomas & Ewan meant they were unable to.

Well played Droitwich and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a thrilling game of football. After his great performance in the match and during training last week, Hayden was awarded the Captains armband for City’s next match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
