Great away performance for Worcester City Youth Colts U9s

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s had a great team performance away from home when they visited the Warndon Villages Cobras U9s team at Little Perdiswell, Worcester on Saturday 16th November 2019.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Hayden gave an inspiring speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Ewan
Defenders - Tom, Theo, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Hayden, Olly, Thomas & Nathan
Forwards - Toby & Ethan

First Half
Both teams started the match well and there were some good displays of passing and defending on show. Both teams were also making progress into the opposition penalty box, however there were few clear cut chances to score despite Toby doing his best to get an early goal for City.

That all changed on the 12 minute mark, when Warndon opened the scoring from a long distance shot.

Not discouraged, a minute later City had the ball in the Warndon penalty area and they displayed some brilliant one touch passing between Ethan, Nathan & Thomas. They just couldn’t manage to get the ball in the back of the net due to an excellent goal keeping display being put on by the Warndon shot stopper.

Over the next few minutes, City had a number of chances, most notably were Max’s shot from the edge of the box and Thomas’s cross to Ethan followed by a shot on goal. However, on all occasions the Warndon goalie was always in the right place to make a save.

It wasn’t until the 17th minute that City got a break through and it came from the boot of Thomas who shot at goal, the Warndon goal keeper got to it but was unable to keep it out (that was Thomas’s second goal of the season).

That was followed a minute later, when Ethan found himself with the ball in the middle of the Warndon box. He slotted his shot into the corner of the Warndon net (that was Ethan’s sixth goal of the season).

In the dying minute of the half, City had the ball in the Warndon penalty box once more and a goal mouth scramble ensued, with shots firing down on the Warndon goal from Thomas, Ethan & Nathan but again the Warndon defence and goal keeper held firm.

Second Half
A few minutes into the half, City won a corner and from the resultant cross Theo found himself with the ball at his feet in the box. His shot found the back of the Warndon net (that was Theo’s first goal of the season).

A further few minutes later and Thomas found himself with the ball wide against the Warndon by-line and from an almost impossible angle he shot at goal, the Warndon goal keeper got to the ball but was unable to keep it out (that was Thomas’s third goal of the season).

Around the 35 minute mark, Ethan got his second goal when he poked the ball into the corner of the net past a diving Warndon goalie (that was Ethan’s seventh goal of the season).

Five minutes later, Ethan picked up the ball in the middle of box and his resultant turn wrong footed a Warndon defender; however his shot on goal was straight at the Warndon goalie.

This period of the game saw Warndon in the ascendancy due to an extra player being added, however City managed to keep them at bay with a great defensive display from Tom & Joel and this was supported by Hayden & Olly in midfield who were breaking up play.

Around the 43rd minute, a Warndon player struck a ferocious long distance shot from midway between the goal and centre circle, however Ewan in the City goal was up to the challenge and made a comfortable save.

In the dying minutes of the match, Warndon managed to make their superior numbers tell and got a couple of goals back, but this didn’t put a dampener on a great City performance.

Well played Warndon and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an entertaining game of football. After his great performance during the match, Ethan was awarded the Captains armband for next week’s match. Thanks to all the City parents for their support on match day.
