A tough match for Worcester City Youth Colts U9s at home

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s battled in a difficult match at home when they hosted the Nunnery Wood Colts Tigers U9s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 30th November 2019.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Joel gave an encouraging speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Ewan
Defenders - Tom, Theo, Max & Joel
Midfielders - Hayden, Ethan, Toby, Olly & Thomas
Forwards - Nathan & Ethan

First Half
The first half started with Nunnery making the majority of the early chances and the closest of these came on the 5 minute mark when a close range effort from Nunnery struck the cross bar, but luckily for City the shot then went out of play.

It wasn’t until around the 13 minute mark that City managed to put Nunnery under any sustained pressure and this came in the form of a succession of three corners, however the Nunnery defence held strong each time and City couldn’t break the deadlock.

Nunnery won a corner of their own on the 16 minute mark and in contrast to the City ones minutes earlier; they managed to convert their chance and took the lead in the match.

City fought back and on the 20 minute mark, had a chance of their own when a crossed ball was headed by a Nunnery defender onto the cross bar of his own goal as he attempted to clear the ball. Unfortunately, this was the closest that City got to scoring in the first half of a game that saw Nunnery being hungrier to get to the ball on any 50/50 chances.

In the 24th minute, Nunnery won another corner and as before, punished City with another goal from the set piece.

At half-time the City boys were reminded of the need to close the ball down when confronted with an opposing player and to keep up the levels of work rate that are expected of them.

Second Half
The half-time team talk infused the City players and the second half started with them on the front foot.

On the 30 minute mark, City Captain Joel attempted a long range effort that was saved by the Nunnery keeper, however the Nunnery shot stopper was unable to hold onto the ball and the rebound fell to Nathan who’s close range shot found the back of the Nunnery net (that was Nathen’s eighth goal of the season).

The remaining part of the second half saw City making most of the running and it was great to see the turn around after the half-time break.

City had a number of chances to score but were denied by a Nunnery goal keeper who was having a great match.

Well played Nunnery Wood and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed a close game of football. After his great performance during the match, Nathan was awarded the Captains armband for the team’s next match. Thanks to all the City parents for their help and support on match day.
