Worcester City Youth Colts U9s rue missed chances at home

Worcester City Youth Colts U9s took part in their first match for four weeks due to the recent weather conditions when they hosted the Warndon Villages Cobras U9s team at Perdiswell Leisure Centre on Saturday 7th March 2020.

Prior to the match, Manager Steve Maitland and Captain Hayden gave an inspiring speech to the rest of the team.

Team Sheet
Goal Keeper - Tom
Defenders - Joel, Theo & Max
Midfielders - Thomas, Ethan B, Hayden (captain), Toby, Olly & Ewan
Forwards - Ethan R & Nathan

First Half
The first half started well for City and in the 6th minute they nearly opened the scoring through a great shot from the edge of the Cobras penalty box by Nathan, the ball was destined for the top right corner, however the Cobras goal keeper pulled off a great two-handed save and the ball went over and wide.

In the 16th minute, Toby found himself with the ball on the edge of the Cobras penalty box and he unleashed a shot which unfortunately went just over the cross bar.

In the 18th minute, one of the Cobras players picked up the ball on the edge of the City penalty box and shot a great ball towards the City goal. Tom playing in goal for City, dove to his left and pulled off a great two-handed save.

In the 20th minute, City had won a corner and from the resultant cross, Joel picked up the ball and struck the ball towards the goal. However, once again the ball went just over the cross bar.

On another day, with our shooting boots on and without a great performance from the Cobras keeper, the City players could have already been a few goals to the good but they were punished in the 21st minute when a Cobras player struck the ball from just inside the City box which looped over the City keepers attempted jump to save it and the ball went in just under the crossbar.

City fought back and a minute later, Ethan R picked up the ball just inside the Cobras half and started off on a run towards the goal. A couple of the Cobras players attempted tackles but the ball always seemed to fall back into Ethan R’s path and he found himself inside the penalty box. He unleashed a shot that went into the bottom right-hand corner despite the attempted diving save from the Cobras keeper (that was Ethan R’s tenth goal of the season).

Second Half
In the 28th minute, in almost a carbon copy of their first goal, a Cobras player struck the ball from just inside the City box which looped over the City keepers attempted jump to save it and the ball went in just under the crossbar.

In the 38th minute, City nearly drew level when Olly picked up the ball inside the Cobras half and ran into the penalty area. He hit a shot that eluded the Cobras keeper and was heading for the right-hand side of the goal; however the ball struck the outside of the post and went out of play.

In the 46th minute, Cobras added another goal to their tally after a bit of a defensive mix up by the City players. City felt disappointed at the end of the game for all the missed chances that they just didn’t manage to put away.

Well played Cobras and good luck for the rest of the season. The match was watched by a few dozen respectful spectators who enjoyed an exciting game of football. After his great performance during the match, Theo was awarded the Captains armband for the team’s next match. Thanks to all the City parents for their help and support on match day.
